Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a compact, international city made up of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, with many outlying islands nearby. It offers employment in hotels, restaurants, property management, construction, transport, finance, retail and technology. Cantonese is the main local language, while English is widely used in business and hospitality; Mandarin is also common. Life is energetic and convenient, with excellent public transport, dense urban neighbourhoods, mountain trails, beaches and a diverse food scene. Housing is expensive, so employer accommodation or careful budgeting can be valuable. Overseas workers normally need an employment visa sponsored by an employer before starting work; approval depends on qualifications, experience, a genuine job offer and prevailing immigration requirements. New arrivals should arrange a valid passport, medical or background documents where requested, proof of accommodation and local banking and tax registration. Hong Kong’s subtropical climate means hot, humid summers and occasional typhoons.
