Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers varied opportunities in hotel sales, events, tourism, restaurants and resort operations, especially in Jakarta, Bali, Batam, Lombok and major business destinations. Bali is the most internationally oriented island, with a relaxed lifestyle, strong hospitality network and higher living costs in popular areas. Java, including Jakarta, offers larger corporate and MICE markets, while Lombok and the smaller islands provide a quieter resort setting. Indonesian culture values politeness, community, respect for elders and religious diversity; learning basic Bahasa Indonesia is highly useful. Employees should expect tropical weather, busy traffic in cities and a social lifestyle centered on food and family. Foreign nationals generally require employer sponsorship and an appropriate work permit and stay visa before working. Candidates should confirm immigration arrangements, housing, tax obligations, insurance and relocation support directly with Shangri-La before accepting an offer.
