Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a compact, energetic destination combining dense urban districts, international business and traditional Chinese culture. Job opportunities are strong in hospitality, finance, retail, technology, aviation and professional services, although competition and living costs are high. Cantonese is widely spoken, English is common in business and hotels, and Mandarin is increasingly useful. Life offers excellent public transport, diverse food, shopping, nightlife, hiking and beaches, but apartments are typically small and expensive. Employees recruited from overseas usually need an employment visa sponsored by their employer; applicants must demonstrate a genuine job offer, suitable qualifications or experience and a salary meeting market standards. Employers normally assist with the application, while dependants may qualify for dependant visas. Secure accommodation before arrival if possible, budget for deposits and agency fees, and arrange medical insurance, banking and a local identity card after arrival. Hong Kong is generally safe, efficient and well connected to the region.
