Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a dynamic coastal city and major international business centre, although the wider territory includes Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Finance, hospitality, retail, technology, aviation and professional services provide substantial employment opportunities. The culture blends Cantonese traditions with global influences, and English is widely used in business, while Cantonese is valuable for daily life. Residents enjoy excellent public transport, diverse dining, hiking trails, beaches and a fast-paced urban lifestyle. Housing can be expensive, particularly near central districts, so many workers live in Kowloon or the New Territories and commute by MTR. Foreign professionals normally require an employment visa sponsored by their employer, with eligibility based on qualifications, experience and a genuine job offer. Employers commonly assist with visa documentation, but applicants should confirm current Immigration Department requirements. New arrivals should budget for rent, deposits, healthcare, transport and initial relocation costs.
