Candidates typically need a degree or diploma in hospitality, sports management, recreation or a related field, together with several years of experience in resort recreation, fitness or guest activities. Strong leadership, communication and customer-service skills are essential. The role expects the candidate to create engaging programmes for adults and families, maintain high safety and service standards, manage equipment and operating budgets, coordinate schedules and vendors, and ensure an enjoyable guest experience. First-aid, lifeguard or relevant fitness certifications, along with experience in an international luxury resort, would be advantageous.
Shangri-La Group is a leading luxury hospitality company founded in Hong Kong, with hotels, resorts and residences across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America and other major destinations. Its portfolio includes the Shangri-La, Kerry, JEN and Traders brands. Shangri-La properties are known for warm Asian hospitality, high service standards, distinctive dining, wellness facilities and carefully designed guest experiences. In the Philippines, the group operates prominent city and resort properties, including destinations in Manila, Cebu and Boracay. The company employs people across hotel operations, food and beverage, recreation, engineering, finance and corporate functions. Working for Shangri-La generally offers exposure to international service practices, structured training and opportunities for career progression, although resort roles can involve rotating shifts, weekends, holidays and demanding peak-season workloads.
The Philippines is an archipelago with varied opportunities across major islands. Luzon, especially Manila, offers the widest range of corporate, hotel and retail jobs, while Cebu and Visayas destinations provide strong demand in resorts, tourism, diving and guest services. Boracay, Palawan and Bohol are popular for hospitality and recreation work, though accommodation and seasonal costs can be higher. Filipino culture is welcoming, community-oriented and strongly influenced by family, food, music and festivals; English is widely used in business and tourism. Lifestyle ranges from busy urban living to relaxed beach communities, with generally warm weather and affordable local transport. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work permit, commonly an Alien Employment Permit and a 9(g) work visa. Employers often assist with documentation, but candidates should confirm housing, insurance, tax and relocation benefits before accepting an offer.
