Working in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a dense, international city with a fast-paced lifestyle, excellent public transport and easy access to beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Hospitality is a significant source of employment, with opportunities in hotels, restaurants, catering, tourism, retail and events. The workplace is multicultural, and Cantonese is widely used locally while English and Mandarin are common in hotels. Rent is high, so many employees share accommodation or live in districts connected by the MTR, such as Kowloon, the New Territories or Hong Kong Island. Hong Kong offers diverse food, shopping, nightlife and efficient healthcare, but living costs can be substantial. Foreign nationals generally need an employer-sponsored employment visa before starting work; eligibility depends on qualifications, experience, salary and the role’s local labour-market circumstances. New arrivals should arrange a written contract, accommodation, insurance and visa documentation, and confirm whether staff housing or meals are provided.
