Working in Indonesia

Indonesia offers varied opportunities across Java, Sumatra, Bali, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan. Jakarta, on Java, is the country’s main financial and corporate center, with strong demand in banking, technology, retail, logistics, and professional services. Surabaya and Bandung also have diverse business markets, while Bali is popular for tourism, hospitality, digital work, and expatriate lifestyles. Indonesian culture values community, respect for elders, religious diversity, and relationship-building; Bahasa Indonesia is essential for many local roles. Living costs vary considerably, with Jakarta and Bali generally more expensive than regional cities. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship, an approved work permit, and a limited-stay visa or KITAS before working legally. Employers commonly support relocation paperwork, but candidates should verify tax, insurance, housing, and dependent-visa arrangements. Traffic, tropical weather, and occasional natural disasters should be considered when choosing accommodation and location.
