As a Postal Delivery Driver (Postie) with Royal Mail, you will collect, sort and deliver letters and parcels safely and efficiently across an assigned local route. The role requires a valid UK driving licence, safe and confident driving, good physical fitness, reliability and the ability to work outdoors in changing weather. You should be comfortable walking for extended periods, lifting mail and parcels, using handheld technology and dealing courteously with customers. Royal Mail expects candidates to work independently, manage time effectively, follow health and safety procedures and maintain high service standards. Previous delivery or customer-service experience is helpful but may not be essential, as training is generally provided.
Royal Mail Group is one of the United Kingdom’s best-known postal and delivery organisations. Its operations include Royal Mail, which handles letters and parcels across the UK, and international parcel business GLS. The company serves households, businesses and public-sector customers through a large network of delivery offices, processing centres, vehicles and postboxes. Royal Mail plays an important role in connecting communities, particularly through its universal postal service. Employees work in areas including delivery, logistics, transport, engineering, customer service, technology and corporate support. The organisation continues to adapt to changing postal volumes and the growth of online shopping by developing parcel services, improving operational efficiency and investing in digital systems. A Postal Delivery Driver is central to the customer experience, representing the company locally while ensuring mail and parcels reach customers securely and on time.
The United Kingdom offers job opportunities in logistics, healthcare, technology, construction, hospitality, finance, education and public services. Its culture is diverse, generally polite and community-minded, with strong traditions in sport, music, theatre and local festivals. Lifestyle varies considerably: London and other major cities offer extensive transport, entertainment and international communities, while smaller towns and rural areas provide a quieter pace and often lower housing costs. Living expenses, especially rent, can be high in southern England. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals usually need immigration permission unless they hold settled or pre-settled status. Other nationals normally require a visa, and eligibility depends on the occupation, salary and employer sponsorship. Postal delivery roles are not generally eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship, so applicants should confirm their right to work before relocating. The UK has regional differences in weather, accents and public services, so researching the specific location is advisable.
