Working in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel manufacturing, engineering, information technology, tourism, logistics, finance and business services, with Colombo and the Western Province serving as major employment centres. The island has a warm tropical climate, affordable living compared with many international destinations, diverse food, scenic beaches, mountains and a strong cultural heritage. Sinhala and Tamil are the main local languages, while English is widely used in business and higher education. Public transport is inexpensive, though commuting can be busy. Foreign nationals normally need an appropriate employment or internship visa, sponsorship and approval before starting work; requirements vary by nationality and placement type, so confirmation from the employer and Sri Lankan authorities is essential. Accommodation, health insurance, transport and local registration should be arranged before relocation. Short-term internships may have different rules from regular employment.
