The United Arab Emirates is not an island but a Gulf federation of seven emirates, with Abu Dhabi and Dubai offering the widest range of hospitality, tourism, retail, aviation and business opportunities. The culture combines Islamic traditions, Emirati heritage and a highly international workforce; modest dress and respectful behaviour are appreciated, particularly during Ramadan. Abu Dhabi generally offers a calmer lifestyle than Dubai, with beaches, desert excursions, malls, museums and excellent restaurants. Summers are extremely hot, while winters are pleasant. Employers normally sponsor a residence and work visa after an offer, arrange medical checks and provide an Emirates ID; employees should not work on a tourist visa. Packages may include accommodation, transport, meals, insurance and annual flights, so confirm these details before relocating. Housing, schooling and leisure costs vary considerably. International airports, reliable roads and extensive expatriate communities make settling in relatively straightforward.
