The Indirect Tax (VAT) Assistant supports EY’s tax team with VAT compliance, registrations, returns, reconciliations, research and client communications. The role typically requires a degree or diploma in accounting, finance, business or a related subject, with an interest in taxation and professional development toward ACCA, ACA or a similar qualification. Candidates should have strong numerical and analytical skills, attention to detail, good written and spoken English, and confidence using Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Experience with VAT or professional services is helpful but may not be essential for an entry-level position. EY expects candidates to be organised, commercially aware, discreet with confidential information, collaborative and able to manage deadlines while delivering accurate, high-quality work.
EY, formerly Ernst & Young, is one of the world’s leading professional-services organisations and a member of the Big Four. It provides assurance, tax, transaction and consulting services to businesses, governments and entrepreneurs. EY’s Malta practice supports local and international clients across areas such as audit, accounting, corporate finance, technology, risk and indirect taxation. The firm combines local market knowledge with access to a global network of professionals and specialists. EY places significant emphasis on professional qualifications, continuous learning, teamwork, innovation and helping clients respond to regulatory and commercial change. Employees may work with organisations ranging from growing local companies to multinational groups, gaining exposure to varied industries and cross-border matters. The Malta office offers an environment suited to graduates and early-career professionals who want structured development within an internationally recognised organisation.
Malta offers opportunities in financial services, accounting, audit, tax, gaming, technology, tourism, aviation, healthcare and maritime services. English is an official language and is widely used at work, while Maltese is the national language; Italian is also commonly understood. Life combines a Mediterranean climate, historic towns, swimming and an active social scene, although summers can be hot and traffic and housing costs are notable challenges. Valletta, Sliema, St Julian’s, Gzira and nearby areas are popular with international workers. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally need to register their employment and residence, while non-EU nationals normally require a work permit, often arranged through the employer, and may need a Single Permit. Before relocating, candidates should check current immigration rules, secure accommodation, budget for rent and confirm healthcare and tax arrangements. Malta’s compact size makes commuting practical, though public transport can be busy.
