Company Info

Rakuten Group, Inc. is a major Japanese internet services company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1997, it operates a broad ecosystem covering online marketplaces, fintech, mobile communications, travel, digital content, advertising, and professional services. Rakuten Ichiba is one of Japan's largest e-commerce platforms, supported by payment, delivery, data, and customer loyalty services. The company employs people from many countries and promotes English as an important working language across much of its global organization. Its technology teams build high-volume consumer products, enterprise platforms, and logistics systems serving millions of users and merchants. Rakuten offers opportunities to work on large-scale, business-critical products in an international environment, although employees should expect a fast-moving organization with substantial cross-functional coordination.

Destination Guide

Japan offers strong opportunities for software engineers in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and other technology centers, particularly in e-commerce, fintech, cloud services, gaming, robotics, and logistics. Japanese workplaces value punctuality, preparation, teamwork, and respect for hierarchy, while international companies may use English extensively. Life in Japan combines excellent public transport, reliable infrastructure, varied food, and safe urban communities, though Tokyo housing and commuting can be expensive. Foreign employees normally need a work visa, commonly the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status, supported by the employer. A degree or relevant professional experience is usually required. Relocation planning should include housing, residence registration, health insurance, banking, taxation, and language support. Learning basic Japanese is highly beneficial for daily life, administration, and social integration, even where the workplace operates mainly in English.
