Destination Guide

The United Arab Emirates is not an island, but a federation of seven emirates, with Dubai offering extensive opportunities in hotels, tourism, aviation, retail, finance, technology and events. The culture combines Emirati traditions, Islamic values and a highly international population; modest dress and respectful behaviour are expected, especially during Ramadan. Dubai has a modern, fast-paced lifestyle, excellent public transport, beaches, shopping, restaurants and year-round sunshine, although summers are extremely hot. Most foreign employees work under an employer-sponsored residence visa, usually arranged after an offer and medical screening; requirements and benefits should be confirmed in writing. Employers may provide accommodation, transport, meals, insurance or flights, but this varies. New arrivals should budget carefully for deposits, commuting and living costs, and verify contracts through official UAE channels before travelling or paying recruitment fees.
