Destination Guide

Jakarta is on Java, Indonesia’s most developed and commercially active island. It offers opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, finance, technology, manufacturing, and multinational companies, with particularly strong demand for skilled hospitality and engineering professionals. Life is fast-paced and urban, with extensive shopping, dining, nightlife, and public transport, although traffic and humid weather can be challenging. Indonesian culture values politeness, community, modesty, and respect for seniority; English is useful in international hotels, while basic Bahasa Indonesia helps greatly. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work visa or stay permit, commonly arranged through the company before employment begins. Candidates should confirm salary, accommodation, health insurance, tax, relocation support, and contract terms. Jakarta’s cost of living is moderate by international standards, but central housing can be expensive. Bali, Lombok, and other islands offer a slower lifestyle and tourism work, but may have fewer senior corporate opportunities.
