Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact, highly international city with strong opportunities in hotels, restaurants, finance, retail, technology, logistics and professional services. Although often called an island destination, the territory includes Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Cantonese is the local language, while English is widely used in business and hospitality; Mandarin is also useful. Life is energetic and convenient, with excellent public transport, late-opening shops, diverse food, beaches, hiking trails and a vibrant cultural scene. Housing is expensive, so employees should compare staff accommodation, commuting distance and rental costs carefully. Most overseas professionals need an appropriate employment visa sponsored by their employer before starting work. Applicants generally provide qualifications, experience, a passport and proof of employment. Relocation planning should include medical insurance, banking, mobile service and dependent arrangements. Hong Kong's humid summers and dense urban environment may require some adjustment.
