Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers opportunities in hospitality, finance, retail, aviation, technology, healthcare and professional services. The culture blends Cantonese traditions, international influences, efficient public services and a fast-paced working style. Life is urban and compact, with excellent MTR transport, diverse food, shopping, hiking trails, beaches and lively neighbourhoods. Accommodation can be expensive, especially on Hong Kong Island and in central Kowloon, so many workers live in the New Territories or share flats. Foreign nationals generally need an approved employment visa before starting work; the employer normally sponsors the application and must demonstrate a genuine role and suitable salary. Applicants should prepare a passport, qualifications, employment records and health or police documents if requested. Hong Kong is subtropical, with hot humid summers, rainy periods and occasional typhoons. New arrivals should budget for rent, deposits, transport, insurance and daily expenses.
