Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, retail, finance, logistics and professional services. The culture combines Chinese traditions with international influences, and Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in business and hospitality. Life is fast-paced, highly connected and convenient, with excellent public transport, varied food, shopping, beaches and hiking areas. Housing can be expensive, particularly near central districts, so many employees live in Kowloon or the New Territories and commute by MTR. Foreign nationals generally need an approved employment visa before starting work; the employer normally sponsors the application and the role must meet immigration requirements. New arrivals should arrange accommodation, health insurance or employer medical coverage, banking and a local identity card after approval. Hong Kong has humid summers, mild winters and occasional typhoons, so newcomers should prepare for a compact urban lifestyle and changing weather.
