Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong opportunities in banking, finance, technology, professional services, logistics, healthcare and education, with especially active hiring for compliance, risk, technology and regional management roles. Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in business and government; Mandarin is also useful. The culture combines Chinese traditions with an international, fast-paced working environment. Living costs, particularly rent, are high, but public transport is excellent and salaries can be competitive. Residents enjoy dense urban neighborhoods, diverse food, shopping, nightlife and easy access to beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Overseas professionals generally need an employment visa sponsored by their employer, usually through the General Employment Policy, and must demonstrate a suitable job and qualifications. Relocating employees should arrange housing, health insurance, banking, tax advice and school planning where relevant. Hong Kong's compact geography makes commuting practical, although peak-hour travel can be busy.
