Tokyo and nearby prefectures provide the largest concentration of multinational employers, while Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Hokkaido offer different technology and lifestyle options. Japanese workplaces value punctuality, preparation, teamwork, respect, and attention to detail; international companies may use more English, although Japanese skills improve daily life and career prospects. Living costs are highest in Tokyo, while regional cities can be more affordable. Public transport is reliable, healthcare is high quality, and daily life is generally safe. Foreign professionals normally need an employer-sponsored work visa, with eligibility depending on qualifications and role. Relocation commonly involves securing housing, residence registration, health insurance, a tax number, and a bank account. Families should also research schools, childcare, and dependent visas before moving.
