Destination Guide

Malaysia offers strong opportunities in banking, technology, shared services, consulting, manufacturing, tourism and digital businesses. Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley are the main employment hubs, while Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching also provide growing opportunities. The culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences, and English is widely used in professional workplaces. Lifestyle costs are generally lower than in Singapore or major Western cities, although central Kuala Lumpur housing can be expensive. Malaysia has attractive food, beaches and islands such as Langkawi, Penang and the Perhentian Islands. Foreign professionals normally need employer sponsorship for an Employment Pass, with approval managed through the relevant authorities. Before relocating, confirm salary, tax, healthcare, housing and pass conditions with the employer. Public transport is strongest in Kuala Lumpur, while a car is more useful elsewhere.
