Hospitality remains one of the largest sectors, particularly around Grand Baie, Flic-en-Flac, Port Louis, Balaclava and the east coast. The island has a multicultural population with Indian, African, European and Chinese influences; English is widely used in business, while French and Mauritian Creole are common in daily life. Residents enjoy a warm climate, beaches, hiking, water sports and a relaxed lifestyle, although traffic and housing costs can be significant in popular areas. Foreign workers generally need an approved employment or occupation permit before starting work. Employers often support applications, but requirements vary by nationality and position. Candidates should confirm accommodation, meals, transport, medical cover, service charge and relocation assistance before accepting an offer.
