Destination Guide

Malaysia offers technology opportunities in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Penang and Johor, especially in consulting, cloud, cybersecurity, software engineering and shared services. For an architect working with public-sector clients, Kuala Lumpur is the most likely base, while Penang provides a more relaxed technology and engineering environment. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences; English is widely used in professional settings. Lifestyle costs are moderate compared with many global technology hubs, and residents enjoy varied food, tropical weather, beaches and easy regional travel. Popular islands include Langkawi, Penang, Tioman and the Perhentians. Foreign professionals generally need employer sponsorship for an Employment Pass, and the employer normally handles the application. Before relocating, confirm salary, tax treatment, medical coverage, work location, remote-work policy and visa eligibility. Housing and international-school costs should also be considered.
