Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in apparel manufacturing, tourism, information technology, engineering, finance, logistics, and business services, with Colombo and nearby industrial zones serving as major employment centers. The culture blends South Asian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and Christian traditions, and people generally value hospitality, family, and community. Lifestyle costs are moderate, although Colombo is more expensive than smaller cities. The island provides beaches, hill country, wildlife parks, historic cities, and excellent local food. Foreign nationals normally need the appropriate employment or residence authorization arranged with employer support; a tourist visa does not permit employment. Interns should confirm visa requirements, accommodation, insurance, taxes, transport, and workplace arrangements before travelling. English is widely used in professional settings, while Sinhala and Tamil are the main local languages. Public transport is affordable, though traffic can be heavy around Colombo.
