Penang combines heritage streets, diverse food and a lively expatriate community, while Langkawi provides a quieter resort lifestyle, beaches and outdoor activities. Malaysian culture is multicultural, with Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous influences; English is widely used in hospitality, although learning basic Malay is helpful. Living costs vary, with island resorts often providing staff accommodation or meals. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored Employment Pass, and must not begin work before approval. Relocating staff should confirm accommodation, transport, medical coverage, contract terms and airport access. Malaysia has tropical weather year-round, with monsoon conditions varying by region.
