Destination Guide

Japan is an island nation with strong opportunities in luxury hotels, restaurants, tourism, retail, technology and international business, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Okinawa and Hokkaido. Japanese workplaces value punctuality, respect, teamwork, careful communication and attention to detail. Tokyo offers excellent public transport, world-class dining and entertainment, but housing and daily expenses can be high. Regional cities may provide a calmer lifestyle and lower rents. For employment, most foreign nationals need an appropriate work visa, normally sponsored by the employer; a passport, employment contract and proof of qualifications are commonly required. A Certificate of Eligibility usually supports the overseas visa application. Relocating workers should budget for deposits, agency fees, transport, health insurance, pension and residence registration. Learning practical Japanese is highly beneficial, even in international hotels. Japan has four seasons, reliable infrastructure and excellent safety, although earthquakes and typhoons require basic preparedness.
