Destination Guide

Qatar is a compact Gulf country and peninsula rather than an island, with Doha as its main employment and lifestyle hub. Hospitality, tourism, events, aviation, retail, fitness and food and beverage offer opportunities, especially in international hotels and resorts. The culture combines modern global influences with Qatari traditions; modest dress, respectful behaviour and awareness of Islamic customs are important. Doha provides modern malls, beaches, restaurants, museums and an active expatriate community, although summers are extremely hot. Most overseas employees need employer-sponsored work and residence permits; the employer commonly coordinates entry, medical checks and local identification. Before relocating, confirm salary, accommodation, meals, transport, insurance, annual leave and contract terms. Qatar has no personal income tax on employment salary, but living costs vary considerably. Public transport is improving, while taxis and private cars remain common. Weekend and holiday shifts are normal in hotel work.
