Destination Guide

Batam is an Indonesian island in the Riau Archipelago, located close to Singapore and Malaysia. Its strong manufacturing, logistics, tourism, and hospitality sectors create opportunities in hotels, restaurants, retail, finance, engineering, and customer service. The lifestyle is generally more affordable than Singapore, with modern malls, seafood restaurants, beaches, water activities, and a growing expatriate community. Malay and Indonesian influences shape local culture, while Bahasa Indonesia is essential for everyday communication; English is useful in international hotels. Foreign nationals normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and an appropriate Indonesian work visa, with the employer handling much of the application process. Do not work on a tourist visa. Relocating employees should confirm accommodation, health insurance, taxation, transport, and contract details before arrival. Batam has an airport, ferry links to Singapore and Malaysia, and regular connections to other Indonesian cities. Tropical weather is warm and humid year-round, with heavier rain during the monsoon season.
