Company Info

Rakuten Group, Inc. is a major Japanese technology and internet company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1997, it began as an online marketplace and has expanded into a broad ecosystem covering e-commerce, fintech, digital content, travel, communications, advertising, and professional sports. Its businesses include Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten Card, Rakuten Bank, Rakuten Mobile, Rakuten Travel, and Viber. The company serves customers and merchants in Japan and international markets, using a shared membership and loyalty platform to connect its services. Because Rakuten operates large-scale consumer, financial, cloud, and mobile platforms, cybersecurity is a significant priority. Rakuten-CERT supports the company’s security defense, incident response, threat analysis, and resilience activities. The workplace is generally international and fast-moving, with opportunities to collaborate across technical and business divisions.

Destination Guide

Japan offers strong opportunities in cybersecurity, software engineering, cloud computing, finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and hospitality, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Work culture values reliability, teamwork, preparation, and respect for seniority, although international technology companies often use more flexible and English-friendly practices. Lifestyle ranges from fast-paced urban living to quieter coastal and rural communities, with excellent public transport, safety, food, and healthcare. Non-Japanese nationals normally need an appropriate work visa, commonly the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status; the employer usually supports the application and provides required documents. Highly skilled professionals may qualify for faster permanent-residence pathways. Before relocating, budget for housing deposits, transport, national health insurance, taxes, and registration procedures. Learning basic Japanese makes daily life and workplace integration easier, even when English is used professionally.
