Rakuten Group, Inc. is a major Japanese technology and internet company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded in 1997, it operates a broad ecosystem covering e-commerce, fintech, digital content, travel, advertising, and telecommunications. Rakuten Mobile is expanding Japan’s mobile network and enterprise communications services, while the wider group connects its businesses through the Rakuten ecosystem and membership program. The company is known for its English-language working environment, international workforce, and emphasis on innovation, data, and digital transformation. Its enterprise divisions work with organizations across Japan to provide cloud, mobile, connectivity, platform, and business technology solutions. Employees may experience a fast-moving culture with significant opportunities to work across business units, although priorities and processes can change quickly as Rakuten continues investing in its technology and telecommunications businesses.
Japan offers strong opportunities in technology, telecommunications, software engineering, data, finance, manufacturing, tourism, and international business, with the greatest concentration in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. The culture values punctuality, politeness, teamwork, and attention to detail. Workplaces can be structured and demanding, though international companies often use English and offer more flexible practices. Japan provides excellent public transport, safety, healthcare, food, and regional travel, but Tokyo living costs and housing deposits can be high. Foreign professionals normally need an employer-sponsored work visa, such as the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status; qualifications and relevant experience are important. Highly skilled professionals may qualify for preferential pathways. Before relocating, arrange a residence card, registered address, health insurance, pension enrollment, tax procedures, and a bank account. Learning basic Japanese makes daily life and workplace integration considerably easier.
