Destination Guide

Japan offers opportunities in technology, telecommunications, retail, engineering, finance, tourism and corporate services, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and regional hubs. Work culture values punctuality, teamwork, attention to detail and respect for seniority, though international companies may be more flexible. Lifestyle ranges from fast-paced urban living to quieter coastal and rural communities, with excellent public transport, healthcare and safety. Foreign employees normally need an appropriate work visa, commonly the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status, sponsored by the employer. Requirements depend on qualifications and the position. Relocation usually involves securing housing, registering locally, arranging health insurance and obtaining a residence card. Learning Japanese is highly beneficial, particularly for customer-facing, retail and partner-management roles. Japan’s four main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, each offering different climates, industries and lifestyles.
