Company Info

Rakuten Group, Inc. is a major Japanese technology and internet company headquartered in Tokyo. Founded as an online marketplace, it has expanded into a broad ecosystem covering e-commerce, fintech, mobile communications, digital content, travel, advertising, and energy services. Rakuten operates through a membership-based model that connects customers across its businesses and rewards them through the Rakuten Point program. Its energy operations are part of the company’s wider effort to develop sustainable and digitally enabled services, including electricity retail and renewable-energy initiatives. Rakuten has a highly international workforce and promotes English as an important business language, although Japanese is often required for domestic operations and stakeholder communication. The company is known for a fast-paced, entrepreneurial culture, cross-business collaboration, and opportunities to work on large-scale consumer and infrastructure-related projects.

Destination Guide

Japan offers opportunities in technology, consulting, finance, engineering, renewable energy, manufacturing, hospitality, and education, with Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka serving as major employment centers. The culture values punctuality, respect, teamwork, and careful attention to detail. Daily life is generally safe and convenient, with excellent public transport, reliable services, and varied food and entertainment. Tokyo provides the broadest international career options but has high housing costs; regional cities can offer a slower pace and lower expenses. Foreign professionals usually need an employer-sponsored work visa, such as the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa, while highly skilled workers may qualify for preferential routes. Relocation commonly involves securing housing, registering an address, obtaining a residence card, arranging health insurance, and opening a bank account. Learning basic Japanese greatly helps with administration and social integration.
