Destination Guide

The United Arab Emirates is not an island, but Dubai offers a coastal, resort-focused lifestyle with beaches, shopping, dining and international entertainment. Hospitality, tourism, aviation, retail, finance, technology and construction provide many job opportunities, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The culture combines Emirati traditions with a large expatriate community; modest dress and respect for local customs are important, especially during Ramadan. The lifestyle is modern and convenient, although rent, transport and summer temperatures can be high. Most overseas employees require an employer-sponsored residence visa, work permit and medical examination. Employers commonly arrange visa processing, health insurance and sometimes accommodation or transport, but contracts should be checked carefully. New arrivals should budget for housing deposits, learn local labor regulations and confirm whether dependents can be sponsored. English is widely used in workplaces, while Arabic is the official language.
