Destination Guide

The United Arab Emirates is a federation of seven emirates rather than an island, with Dubai and Abu Dhabi serving as the main employment centres. Opportunities are strong in aviation, logistics, tourism, finance, technology, construction, healthcare, and international trade. The culture combines Arab traditions, Islamic values, and a highly diverse expatriate community; respectful dress and behaviour are expected, particularly during Ramadan. Lifestyle options range from modern city living, restaurants, beaches, and shopping to desert activities and quieter residential areas. Most expatriates work under an employer-sponsored residence visa, while the employer normally arranges work permits and medical checks. Dependants may be sponsored subject to salary and documentation requirements. Housing, schooling, transport, and health insurance should be researched carefully, as living costs can be high. Dubai Metro and taxis are useful, while driving is common.
