Destination Guide

Indonesia is an archipelago with opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism, aviation, technology and international business. Bali is the best-known destination for resort work and offers a relaxed lifestyle, beaches, arts, Hindu traditions and a large expatriate community. Java, including Jakarta and Surabaya, provides broader corporate and hospitality opportunities, efficient transport and a faster urban lifestyle. Lombok and other islands offer quieter surroundings and growing tourism markets. Indonesian culture values respect, community, family and religious diversity; modest dress and awareness of local customs are important. Living costs vary considerably, with Bali and Jakarta generally more expensive than regional areas. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship and an appropriate work permit and stay visa before starting work; working on a tourist visa is not permitted. Employers may assist with permits, accommodation, relocation, healthcare and flights, but these benefits must be confirmed in the contract.
