Destination Guide

Penang Island is one of Malaysia’s most established hospitality and lifestyle destinations, with job opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, healthcare, education, technology, and retail. George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage city, offers a multicultural atmosphere shaped by Malay, Chinese, Indian, and colonial influences, with excellent food and frequent cultural festivals. Resort areas such as Batu Ferringhi provide a quieter beach lifestyle, while George Town has more urban conveniences, cafés, hospitals, and international services. Living costs are generally lower than Kuala Lumpur, although beachfront housing can be expensive. International hires normally need employer sponsorship for an employment pass, and approval must be obtained before working; dependants may require separate passes. Candidates should confirm eligibility, medical requirements, housing, insurance, tax, and relocation support directly with Shangri-La. Penang has an international airport, reliable roads, ferries, schools, and practical expatriate services.
