Destination Guide

Malaysia is not one island but offers several attractive island and coastal work destinations, including Langkawi, Penang, Pangkor, Tioman, Redang and parts of Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo. Hospitality opportunities are available in hotels, resorts, restaurants, tourism operations, diving, wellness and events, with seasonal demand often increasing during school holidays. Malaysian culture is multicultural, combining Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous traditions; English is widely used in tourism. Island life is relaxed and scenic, but housing, transport and imported goods can cost more than on the mainland. Employers may provide staff accommodation, meals or transport, so these benefits should be confirmed before accepting an offer. Foreign employees normally need an employment pass sponsored by the employer and must not begin work before approval. Relocating workers should budget for deposits, insurance, flights and permits, while checking local weather, ferry or flight schedules and healthcare access.
