Job Description

The Director of Engineering leads all engineering, maintenance, and building-services operations at Shangri-La in Hong Kong. The role typically requires a degree or higher diploma in engineering, building services, facilities management, or a related discipline, together with substantial experience in hotel engineering or a comparable luxury property. Professional knowledge of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, fire and life-safety systems, energy management, and local compliance requirements is expected. The successful candidate will manage budgets, preventive-maintenance programmes, contractors, capital projects, and engineering colleagues while ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient hotel operations. Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, planning, and stakeholder-management skills are essential. Cantonese and English proficiency may be advantageous.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts forms part of Shangri-La Asia Limited, which also has interests in property and related businesses. Its properties generally place strong emphasis on guest experience, colleague development, operational quality, sustainability, and local cultural connection. Working for Shangri-La can provide exposure to international hotel practices, luxury-service operations, large engineering systems, and multicultural teams. Benefits vary by property and may include medical coverage, meals, staff accommodation or allowances, leave, training, and hotel discounts.

Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a busy coastal city and island-and-mainland territory rather than a single island destination. It offers strong opportunities in hospitality, engineering, finance, technology, retail, aviation, and professional services. The culture blends Cantonese traditions with international influences; English is widely used in business, while Cantonese is valuable in daily life. Lifestyle options range from dense urban neighbourhoods, excellent public transport, and diverse dining to hiking, beaches, and outlying islands. Housing is expensive, so relocation packages and accommodation support should be checked carefully. Foreign professionals normally need an employment visa sponsored by their employer, with approval based on qualifications, experience, and a genuine local job offer. Candidates should prepare certified documents, medical or background records if requested, and allow several weeks for processing. Hong Kong has efficient transport, comparatively low personal income-tax rates, and a humid subtropical climate.
