Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact, highly connected city with major employment opportunities in hospitality, finance, technology, retail, healthcare, education and professional services. Its culture blends Cantonese traditions, international influences, excellent food and a fast-paced business environment. Lifestyle options range from dense urban districts and world-class shopping to beaches, hiking trails and outlying islands. Public transport is efficient, and English is widely used in business, although Cantonese is valuable for daily life. Foreign professionals generally need an employment visa sponsored by a local employer; eligibility depends on qualifications, experience, salary and the role’s value to the local market. Employers commonly assist with applications and relocation, while newcomers should budget carefully for housing, deposits, healthcare and schooling. Hong Kong is not technically an island alone, but includes Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.
