Destination Guide

Hong Kong is a compact international finance hub made up of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories, with smaller outlying islands such as Lantau. Job opportunities are strongest in banking, asset management, insurance, technology, consulting, trade and professional services. The culture blends Cantonese traditions with global influences; English is widely used in business, while Cantonese and Mandarin are valuable advantages. Life is energetic and convenient, with excellent public transport, dense urban neighbourhoods, hiking trails, beaches and a strong food scene. Housing is expensive, particularly near Central, but commuting from Kowloon or the New Territories can reduce costs. Most overseas hires require an employment visa sponsored by their employer, generally under the General Employment Policy, and should prepare qualifications, references and proof of experience. Employers commonly assist with visa applications and relocation, though candidates should confirm sponsorship, tax, healthcare and housing arrangements before accepting an offer.
