Destination Guide

Japan offers cybersecurity, cloud, software, consulting, engineering, finance, and manufacturing opportunities, especially in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. Tokyo has the broadest international job market and highest concentration of multinational employers, while Osaka and Nagoya often provide lower living costs and strong technology or industrial sectors. Japanese workplaces generally value punctuality, preparation, teamwork, respect for hierarchy, and careful communication; international firms may operate more flexibly. Daily life is safe and efficient, with excellent rail networks, but housing and commuting in Tokyo can be expensive. Foreign professionals usually need an employer-sponsored work visa, commonly under Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, and must secure a Certificate of Eligibility before entry. Highly skilled professionals may qualify for a points-based visa. Relocation requires arranging housing, residence registration, health insurance, banking, and tax procedures. Learning conversational Japanese is highly beneficial, even where English is used.
