The OOW Navigational Watch is responsible for maintaining a safe navigational watch, monitoring vessel traffic, following passage plans, operating bridge equipment, and responding to emergencies. Candidates normally need an STCW Officer of the Watch certificate, valid seafarer medical fitness certification, GMDSS training, security awareness, and a current seaman’s book. Offshore assignments may also require BOSIET or HUET, offshore medical clearance, and experience on offshore vessels, construction vessels, or rigs. Employers expect strong knowledge of COLREGs, radar and ECDIS operation, accurate reporting, discipline, teamwork, and the ability to work calmly during long rotational deployments.
