Destination Guide

Indonesia offers opportunities in resort hotels, city properties, restaurants, tourism, engineering, construction and facilities management. Popular work destinations include Bali, Java, Lombok, Batam and the islands of the Riau and Nusa Tenggara regions. Bali provides an international lifestyle, beaches, restaurants and a large expatriate community, while Java generally offers better transport, urban services and broader employment options. Indonesian culture values hospitality, respect for seniority, community and religious diversity; modest, considerate behavior is important. Living costs vary considerably, with tourist areas often more expensive. Foreign employees normally need an employer-sponsored work permit and appropriate limited-stay visa, arranged before beginning work. Do not work on a tourist visa. Employers may provide accommodation, meals, transport, medical cover or service charge, but these should be confirmed in the contract. New arrivals should budget for deposits, local transport, insurance and possible relocation costs.
