Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers strong employment opportunities in hotels, restaurants, tourism, retail, finance, technology and professional services. Its hospitality sector is international and regularly recruits people with guest service, culinary, housekeeping, engineering and management experience. Life is energetic and convenient, with excellent public transport, dense urban neighbourhoods, diverse food, shopping, hiking trails and beaches. Cantonese is the main local language, while English is widely used in business and hotels; Mandarin is also valuable. Foreign nationals normally need an employment visa sponsored by a Hong Kong employer, and applications generally require a confirmed job, suitable qualifications and proof that the role cannot easily be filled locally. Relocation costs and rents can be high, especially on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, so candidates should confirm housing, benefits, working hours and visa support before accepting an offer. New arrivals should also arrange an identity card and local bank account.
