Destination Guide

Malaysia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, facilities management, construction, tourism and engineering, especially in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and other coastal destinations. Island locations such as Langkawi and Penang provide a relaxed lifestyle, tropical scenery, water activities and strong hospitality communities, although imported goods and housing can cost more than on the mainland. Malaysian culture is diverse, combining Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous traditions, with English commonly used in workplaces. Employees should expect warm weather, multicultural food and a generally respectful, family-oriented society. Foreign workers normally need an approved employment pass or relevant work permit arranged through the employer before starting work. Qualifications such as electrical competency certificates must be recognised locally where required. Relocating staff should confirm accommodation, transport, medical cover, tax obligations and dependent-pass options with Shangri-La and Malaysian authorities.
