Destination Guide

Hong Kong offers opportunities in hotels, restaurants, retail, finance, technology, logistics, healthcare and education. Its culture blends Cantonese traditions with international influences; Cantonese is widely spoken, while English is common in business and tourism. Lifestyle is energetic and convenient, with excellent public transport, dense urban neighbourhoods, hiking trails, beaches and varied food. Housing can be expensive, especially on Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, so many workers share accommodation or live in the New Territories. Foreign employees generally need an employment visa sponsored by a local employer before starting work; applications usually require a valid offer, relevant qualifications or experience and proof of remuneration. Employers often assist with the process. New arrivals should budget for rent, deposits, transport and healthcare, and check contract terms, working hours and accommodation arrangements carefully.
