Destination Guide

Indonesia offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, restaurants, engineering, tourism, retail and logistics, especially in Bali, Java, Lombok, Batam and the larger cities. Bali is popular with expatriates for its international hospitality scene, beaches and relaxed lifestyle, although housing and traffic can be challenging. Java, including Jakarta and Surabaya, provides broader employment options and better urban transport, while Lombok and smaller islands offer a quieter environment with fewer services. Indonesian culture values politeness, community, family and respectful communication; learning basic Bahasa Indonesia is very helpful. Costs vary considerably by island and location. Foreign employees normally need employer sponsorship, an appropriate work permit and a limited-stay visa or KITAS before starting work. Requirements can change, so confirm the process with Shangri-La and Indonesian immigration. Bring certified documents, allow time for medical and administrative checks, and budget for deposits, transport and initial accommodation.
