Destination Guide

Malaysia is not one island but a country divided between Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo, with popular island destinations including Langkawi, Penang, Tioman, Redang, Sabah and Sarawak. Kuala Lumpur is the main centre for banking, technology, finance, shared services and professional careers, while Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching offer growing opportunities in technology, manufacturing, tourism and business services. The culture is multicultural, combining Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous traditions, with English widely used in corporate workplaces. Living costs are moderate compared with Singapore, although central Kuala Lumpur rents can be higher. Malaysia offers urban conveniences, excellent food, tropical weather and easy regional travel. Foreign employees usually need employer-sponsored approval and an Employment Pass before starting work; dependants may require separate passes. Applicants should confirm visa, tax and relocation arrangements with UOB.
