Destination Guide

Japan is an island nation made up of four main islands—Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku—along with Okinawa and many smaller islands. Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka offer the largest number of opportunities in technology, e-commerce, finance, manufacturing, tourism, and sales. Japanese workplaces value punctuality, preparation, teamwork, and respectful communication, although international companies may have more flexible cultures. Lifestyle costs are highest in Tokyo, while regional cities often provide more space and lower rent. Public transportation is excellent, healthcare is reliable, and food and cultural activities are diverse. Foreign professionals generally need an appropriate work visa, commonly sponsored by an employer; highly skilled professionals may qualify for a points-based visa. Relocation usually involves arranging housing, residence registration, health insurance, banking, and tax procedures. Learning practical Japanese greatly improves daily life and career prospects.
