Destination Guide

Sri Lanka offers opportunities in hotels, resorts, travel companies, restaurants, technology, finance, education and international business, especially in Colombo, Negombo, Kandy, Galle and the southern coast. The culture blends Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and colonial influences, with strong traditions of hospitality, family life, religion, food and festivals. Colombo provides the most urban lifestyle, while coastal and hill-country areas offer a slower pace and easier access to beaches, wildlife and mountains. Living costs are generally lower than in major Western cities, although imported goods and premium accommodation can be expensive. Foreign employees normally need an appropriate employment or residence visa arranged with employer support before working legally; requirements and approvals should be confirmed with Sri Lankan immigration authorities. Relocating candidates should budget for housing, transport, insurance and documentation, and learn local customs, weather patterns and workplace expectations. English is widely used in tourism and business, while Sinhala or Tamil can help with everyday life.
