Destination Guide

Makassar is on Sulawesi, Indonesia's large, culturally diverse island and an important commercial center. Hospitality, aviation, retail, education, logistics, healthcare, and marine tourism provide employment opportunities, while hotels and restaurants regularly seek administrative, service, culinary, and supervisory staff. Local culture blends South Sulawesi traditions, strong family connections, Islamic values, and welcoming social customs. Life in Makassar is generally more affordable than in Jakarta or Bali, with lively food markets, coastal areas, shopping, and access to nearby islands and beaches. The climate is tropical, warm, and humid. Foreign nationals normally need an employer-sponsored work visa and Indonesian work authorization before starting employment; requirements vary by role and nationality. Relocating candidates should confirm benefits, accommodation, taxes, health insurance, and permit sponsorship directly with the employer. Learning basic Indonesian is highly useful for daily life and workplace relationships.
